Paul Matthews (Tate Donovan) é um bioquímico tímido e solitário que não tem muita sorte com as mulheres. Cansado dessa situação e incentivado por amigos, ele procura uma misteriosa cigana que lhe vende uma "poção do amor". Sem levar o elixir muito a sério, Paul propõe fazer uma experiência com a colega Diane Farrow (Sandra Bullock), igualmente azarada com o sexo oposto.
